The ancient Scottish town of Kincardine was county town of Kincardinshire and developed around Kincardine Castle on the county borders of Angus and Aberdeenshire, although few signs of the castle remain today. Back in the middle of the 19th century it seemed a most unlikely place to hold races, but it did so initially on Monday 1st May 1843 on a two mile course owned by Mr Stewart. The feature race, a £100 Match over 4 miles of the course, began with a 6 foot wall after which it then became more challenging. It was a novel match because Mr Robinson owned The Queen but rode the other unnamed bay mare to victory. After racing was over an Ordinary was served in a marquee on the course courtesy of the 79th Lancers. A second, less well reported meeting was held on Thursday 18th April 1844. |
